As we enter 2026, Malta continues to punch above its weight in the European digital economy. From AI integration to advanced cloud services, Maltese firms are at the forefront of the "Digital Decade." However, this ambition is hitting a wall: the talent shortage. According to the 2025 Digital Decade Strategic Roadmap, Malta has achieved 100% 5G and VHCN coverage, but human capital is lagging. The University of Malta estimates a staggering 1:6 skills gap, there are six open ICT roles for every one locally skilled individual.
This is where the conversation shifts from "nice-to-have" diversity to essential Equity. Currently, women make up only about 15% of Malta’s ICT specialists (verified by Eurostat 2025). While Malta has achieved one of the highest female labor participation increases in the EU over the last decade, high-value tech sectors remain gender-segregated. If your company is struggling to hire, the answer isn't just "finding more talent", it's fixing the systemic barriers that prevent women from entering and staying in tech.
True inclusion means addressing why two out of three STEM graduates are still men. It means implementing flexible work models that acknowledge the caregiving reality, where 52% of Maltese women perform daily chores compared to 25% of men. By auditing recruitment and retention internally, Maltese managers can tap into the "other half" of the workforce, turning a 1:6 talent deficit into a competitive advantage.
